Wouldn’t it be nice to earn six-figure per year while doing awesome marketing experiments that move the needle for your clients? Yep, very much doable for a Growth Marketer. While a six-figure paycheck isn’t the pinnacle of success in this line of work, we can all agree that if you’re making that amount of money, you are earning more than enough.
If you’re asking me if I’m doing this for money, find a virtue-signaling blogger elsewhere. Not here. Didn’t you read the tag line? ?
…Make More and Be More
The first tagline was a little cruder. “Skills to Make More Money.” lol While I don’t want to be the goodie-goodie feel-good guy you loathe online, I concede that it’s not always about money. Money is just the representation of the value you give to the world. The bigger the value I bring to the table, the BIGGER THE MOOLAH I receive. So the focus should be on the “value” – not on the money. ?
Welcome to my blog! Awesome to see you here! If you’re a new reader, here’s a quick recap:
- I got accepted to CXL Institute’s Growth Marketing 12-Week Scholarship Program (Woot! Woot!).
- I’m documenting the entire journey so you can have insider access and decide if this path is for you.
I want to maximize this opportunity and honor CXL for their generosity. So my goal isn’t just about getting certified and have a certificate to hang on my LinkedIn bio. I want to do this right. So last week, I came up with a plan on how I can launch my Growth Marketing career with a bang and at the same time honor my benefactors from CXL. So I came up with the following goals that I need to achieve by February 1, 2021:
- Pay-It-Forward. I will be offering a free consulting service for startups and brands who can benefit from the things I learn from CXL. I’m learning for free! Paid by people who don’t know me at all. Isn’t that awesome?! I want to 10X that awesomeness in this world by adding value whenever I can while undergoing this program. This will also help me practice what I learn. What better way to honor your teacher than implementing what you’re taught and seeing others benefit from it too, right?
- Launch my Growth Marketing service the Skills-to-Cash Blueprint way. This is a framework that I’ve been developing for years! It’s a framework on how I acquire new skills rapidly without getting overwhelming by the process of consuming and organizing information. The framework is also designed to help me systematically get clients even while learning the skill. While growth marketing isn’t specifically just one skill (you have to grasp several skills before you can fully maximize and implement growth marketing), I can see that S-t-C Blueprint is still applicable and would definitely help me in achieving all my goals in 12 weeks.
- Land a paying client 😉 Now, I know I mentioned that I will be working for free so I can pay-it-forward but I don’t think landing a paid project defeats the other cause. They’re not mutually exclusive. Both have their place in the grand scheme of things. Doing free work and getting paid clients are actually both indispensable parts of Skills-to-Cash Blueprint ?
- A case study that I can be proud of. I want to have a case study that I can be proud of. Theoretical learning is good but when learning a skill, theories don’t cut it. I want proof in the pudding. I want to show the world that CXL’s stuff works. So yeah, this is an indispensable goal for this 12-week journey.
- Lastly, working process, systems, SOPs, and guidelines. There’s no use in consuming the course and passing the certification. To achieve all the goals above, I should have a reliable, efficient, proven, and repeatable process, guidelines, SOPs, and systems that I can use in doing my work as a growth marketer. I’ve also developed this in my S-t-C Framework. ? It’s not perfect but I can organize everything I learn in such a way that my end result is having a standard operating procedure that I can use, improve, and optimize.
So yeah, what do you guys think? Doable? Let me know in the comment section.
Now I know that this isn’t going to be a walk in the park. The program is at least 100++ hours just for the consumption of the materials. Taking notes, refining my processes, finding people who can benefit from what I learn, and implementing all these stuff are not even factored in. To be honest, I get a little overwhelmed when I review the entire syllabus of the program. It’s crazy.
And one more thing, MATH. Lots of Statistics. I almost flunked Statistics in college (actually, I think I did. But the prof, probably didn’t want to see me next year in her class so she gave me a passing mark). Truth is, I’m also getting some refresher lecture from Khan academy to brush up my Math fundamentals. I’m pretty sure I will be overwhelmed by the Statistics and numbers side of growth marketing. I’m that intimidated and determined at the same time!
The last one is technical marketing. Growth marketing is a cross-functional role. You must know enough to grasp other roles, functions, and areas of digital marketing so you can come up with high-impact growth experiments. There’s no way you can dodge the technical side of digital marketing. And when I say technical, it ranges from installing tracking codes to your landing pages to parsing marketing data, setting up analytics dashboards, and even coding! I can see at least five hours a day to either brush up on what I already know or acquire other sets of skills to become an effective growth marketer. It’s out of the question. The good thing is that CXL Institute has its students covered. Every technical aspect of growth marketing is covered in the program. How dense are the materials? I am yet to find out. I will whine here for sure so you would know. ?
All those things taken into consideration, I will be sacrificing many things to fully complete the program based on my own standards. That would mean unsubscribing from Netflix, no more mobile games, and I would probably limit my usual client acquisition for my other services until Feb 1, 2021. The situation calls for a high-performing version of me if I really want to excel and launch my career as a growth marketer with a bang.
In the spirit of transparency, I will be showing all my “performance” stats to make sure that I make good on my promises and follow through on my commitments. I’m still thinking of how I will track all these numbers but here are the initial things I have in mind:
- No. of hours spent on course consumption
- No. of hours I spend on S-t-C Launch for Growth Marketing
- No. of productive hours
- No. of wasted hours
- No of people/brands I help during the 12-week program.
- If I land a paying client, how much I am going to earn from it.
- Will also add other measurable components of my Skills-to-Cash Blueprint.
Whew, sounds like a lot of work? It is. Go big or go home, baby! There’s no other way around.
Next week, I will be refining the processes I learned from Momoko Price from her Product Messaging course. I will add her processes to my existing ones. S-t-C Blueprint way! I will also try to get certified for the course. Wish me luck!
The Product Messaging course can be a great way for me to offer free landing page copy audits for companies who want to improve their copy and conversion. The more I practice and help businesses with their copy, the more I hone and improve everything I learned from Momoko’s course. It will also improve my existing processes for landing page copywriting.
Every copywriter should take Momoko’s course. I’ve taken lots of other web page copywriting courses for the past few years and nothings comes as scientific and as organized as Momoko’s. That course alone is a career game-changer. Although, I would say some things can be added to the program. Say for example, digging into the brand voice of a client and making it all consistent across the brand’s copy (it wasn’t thoroughly discussed). Also, building and planning the entire pages for a brand’s website could have been expounded. Overall, I can say that one can make lots of money already by just writing a one-page copy for brands based on Momoko’s course. Cool, right?
Here’s an idea, I think I can also do an S-t-C Launch for Landing Page Copywriting. I will write another blog post about this. It’s all about launching a landing page copywriting service. Would you be interested in that topic? Let me know in the comment section.
Okay, that’s it for me. Thanks for dropping by and let me know what you want me to write about. This blog is relatively new editorially speaking. I’ve been sitting on this web property for more than five years. If not for the CXL Insititute’s Scholarship Program, I would have procrastinated for another year. That alone is a win.
If you want to know more about my S-t-C Blueprint, let me know. The blueprint deserves more spotlight. I know that it will help a lot of people, especially those who get so easily overwhelmed by consuming learning materials. I’m so confident that S-t-C Blueprint can help or at least improve how you do things. Give it a shot.
Bye for now.
P.S. A guy posted in the CXL Facebook group his Growth Marketing certificate that he earned in just a month. Holy guacamoooleeee. I’m all about getting certified and learning fast but daaanng, rote learning, and not creating any process around the skill you’re learning is a recipe for failure. Usually, you can create your minimum viable process in less than a month but man, this is growth marketing we’re talking here. If you’re a newbie in digital marketing with a full-time job, I highly doubt that you can create something that would stick in less than a month while learning the ropes of growth marketing. Learn fast but learn effectively.
